This is a surgical procedure of replacing the damaged joints with artificial plastic or metal devices. Such joints might have two or three parts. Usually, the head of upper arms gets replaced by metal devices while the glenoid components need plastic devices replacement.

As I discussed in my last earlier sessions, most of the shoulder injuries heal over time with rest and exercises but few cases need surgical treatment. If your injury is not getting recovered even after prolonged non-surgical treatment or if your shoulder is getting disabled even after pain relief, then we suggest for shoulder replacement. Apart from that, some patients suffer from unbearable pain. For them non-surgical treatments become too painful, so they have to undergo replacement.

Here, sorry to say that we can guarantee any lifespan of your new shoulder. In actual, the life span of your shoulder depends on few combined measures.

First, it depends on your age, body weight, health condition, and activity level.

Second, how well you can follow the post-surgical recommendation very strictly. Wrong shoulder movement, excessive physical activities might wear your replaced shoulder leading to its functional failure.  Here, you must keep in mind that it’s an artificial medical device, so handle with care.

95% of shoulder replacement surgeries become successful without any complications. But yes, unlike any other surgeries this is also associated with fewer risks.

Infections and blood clotting are the two major complications. Using antibiotics and blood thinner before the surgery overcome these risks with ease. However, for people with heart diseases, the risk factor of bleeding and heart failure becomes a serious concern. So, during the surgery, we always monitor the hearth in such cases.

Truly, there is no guaranteed time for recovery. It depends on you and the degree of your protective post-surgical measure fulfillment. My recommendation is you should not hurry to resume your driving, heavy physical activities, and other similar activities.

Once you reach the complete recovery point, you can resume most of your earlier life activities according to your physician’s recommendation. But for clarity, I must inform you that a few of the daily activities might a ‘big no’    after surgery. The activities include,

  • lifting or pushing heavy objects
  • Sports that need a higher degree of arm/shoulder strengths, e.g. boxing.
  • Forceful arm movement like hammering.

But no need to get disappointed as you can resume 85% of your daily activity after surgery and the most positive outcomes is the complete relief of pain.
